What to do after an accident?
The first minutes often determine the outcome. These five steps protect your claims.
Secure
Hazard lights on, warning triangle out — protect yourself and others.
Document
Photos of damage, licence plates, the scene and a sketch of what happened.
Police & Details
Call 110/112 if anyone is injured. Exchange personal details and insurance data.
Sign nothing
No admission of guilt, no hasty statements — not even to the other party's insurer.

Hearing notice? Fine? Official letter?
Only the fine notice (Bußgeldbescheid) starts an appeal deadline: two weeks from service. The hearing notice (Anhörungsbogen) is not yet a fine and starts no deadline — what matters there is what you answer. Don't just pay, and fill in nothing before we have reviewed it. Free of charge, within 24 hours on working days.
Personal data yes, facts no
Name, date of birth, place of residence: these details are mandatory, refusing them is itself a regulatory offence (§ 111 OWiG, up to €1,000). About the allegation itself you say nothing.
Name the driver? Weigh it first
You do not have to say who was driving. But if the driver remains unknown, the authority may impose a logbook requirement on the registered keeper (§ 31a StVZO). We weigh that up together.
Note the deadline
Only the fine notice has an appeal deadline: two weeks from service. Miss it and the notice becomes legally binding and enforceable.
Photograph the notice
Photograph all pages — front, back, and envelope with date. That's enough for our review.
